PRESIDENT'S AWARDS CEREMONY MESSAGE

Good evening and welcome to the 2014 Lake Worth Dollars for Scholars Awards Ceremony.  This is our sixteenth year of awarding scholarships.  In our first year, 1999, we awarded $10,000 to 15 students.  Tonight, $87,000 will be awarded to 56 students.  Forty-nine students will receive $72,000 from the general scholarship fund and 7 students will receive $15,000 from The Barry Grunow Memorial Scholarship for aspiring teachers.  This scholarship was named in honor of Mr. Barry Grunow a teacher at Lake Worth Middle School who was slain in his classroom on the last day of school in 2000.  The Grunow Scholarship is available to students in any public, private or parochial school in Palm Beach County who aspire to teach.  Including tonight's awards we have awarded $835,700 since our initial year.

Many volunteers have worked tirelessly to make these scholarships possible.  Many individuals, businesses and civic clubs have graciously given of their time and money to our mission.  An anonymous donor has contributed $10,000 for two years consecutively.  The Lake Worth High Alumni Foundation pays all overhead expenses of Dollars for Scholars.  Lake Worth High Principal, Dr. George Lockhart contributes annually from flea market funds to assist his students in realizing their dream of a college education.

On behalf of our board of directors and other volunteers and donors, I extend congratulations to each recipient and his/her family.  You were chosen because we have carefully evaluated your application, your grades, test scores, extracurricular activities and recommendations. The bottom line is we have confidence in you.  You are qualified for this scholarship.  Have a successful college career, get a good job, move to Lake Worth, make a lot of money, have a lot of kids and send them to Lake Worth High.
